Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA - The same red clay is used for both the black and red pottery. It is in the firing process where the different hues are created. To create the blackware, the Santa Clara use the reduction method. The reduction method uses animal manure as a fuel and then smothering the fire. This releases carbon from the manure which blackens the pottery.
